Follow the Light

There is something magical about the art of watercolour that has fascinated artists over the centuries.

Firstly, each pigment has its own particular character; transparent or opaque; fine or granular.

Then, there is the traditional fine crafted cotton paper either rough or smooth in texture.

Finally, the water, provides the dynamics and brings both colour and paper to life.

Because of the mediums characteristics, the watercolour artist works from light to dark. This in turn leads to a particular way of seeing the world. In search of my subjects I will ‘follow the light’.

More so, it offers us a new way to connect with the world around us, providing a mirror that reveals our innermost feelings and emotions. Art provides a chance to pause and reflect.

The path we find ourselves on. A road less traveled. A sunset that stops us in our tracks. A sense of place that resonates with us deeply. The passing seasons. Finding beauty in the everyday.

These are the things that drive me to paint.

When I create a painting, I begin with the sky, working from the ‘heavens’ forward, and then work progressively from the distant horizon, moving towards the foreground. The work emerges like a journey that one undertakes.

It is this journey of discovery and self expression that I invite you to share with me.

I am an Englishman settled in The Hague, The Netherlands with my Dutch family. I like to get on my bicycle and explore the nature that surrounds the city. I take my paints with me and paint outside ‘plein air’, as well as at home in my studio.
